Chapter 7:The Deal

When the train of dangerous wastes crossed the Canfranc station towards South, it was a humid and cold early morning of February. The huge containers were painted dark black and didn’t carry any identification. The convoy won’t stop for hours, and just a handful of villagers were able to see it pass.

Officially, it came from the nuclear central of Brennilis, in the Northwest of France, and its destination was somewhere in the central plateau of Spain.

That travel was the last step of a complex treaty between France and Spain, in which the regime were trying to improve its recent openness. The visit from Nixon and Kissinger was close, so this was a perfect chance to improve the relations with France. Spain, interested in improve their nuclear technology, would take care of 40 tons of nuclear wastes from France. In the meantime, the French government would provide them with relevant information to build advanced nuclear power stations and would talk in their behalf at the UN.

Obviously this treaty was absolutely secret, and the population couldn’t, under any circumstance, know that Spain was accepting, without any trouble, wastes that could be very dangerous.

Two days later, in the middle of Castilla La Mancha (central Spain), and under a light rain, the last truck with the containers parked next to a huge pitch. It was the darkest hour of the night, but a handful of lights that were close could light the scene: there was a hole of 100 x 50 meters, and around 50 meters deep.

Don Pierre Victor Auger, expert in nuclear energy, had been sent from Paris to be the leader of this mission, and with a very strong French accent, gave the last orders to the workers and kept playing with a Geiger counter:

- “Good work, gentlemen. Let’s do this the right way. Remember, those containers can’t suffer any damage, for any reason. They are full of wastes from a nuclear power plant, so the radiation could kill all of us in seconds. If the containers are good, everything is good and everybody is safe. Remember the security instructions and the order of each container. When we have all of them in this pitch, you have to start to fill it with the mixture you were instructed. Gentlemen, stay awake and everything will be okay".

The works ended as expected. After 48 hours the only lead about what happened there, was the wheel marks of dozens of heavy vehicles. The rains and the plants would cover any evidence very soon. The exact spot was in the middle of a small valley, surrounded by hills covered by forests. An old path crossed the hillside and ended in an old village road. After 4 kilometers there was a small town of poor people who never wondered what were the lights that they saw in the valley, two days before. And after another two kilometers, you could see in the horizon a huge lake of silvery waters.

Chapter 6:The Truth

"What Mr. Pompidou didn’t say in that historic appearance was that everything was a lie, designed in the last minute by his government to hide a reality so brutal that nobody, ever, should know it. Never.

In the old parisienne neighborhood there weren’t any rioters, terrorist or armed groups, nor… it was something worse, an ancient horror that had been released… a monstrosity able to merge the world of the living and the dead.

During the next weeks, the metro and complete parts of the area were closed, and any attempt from the press to check the many inconsistencies of the official tale, were stopped instantly thanks to the “Law Montmartre”, (that was the name of all the extraordinary measures approved to hide all the event), which banned the presence of the press to avoid that relevant data could come to light, being a risk for France.

So nobody saw the soldiers with special suits recovering dozens of corpses full of bullets. Nor the military scientists taking samples. Nobody could saw the dozens of trucks coming out of the neighborhood, covered as delivery trucks and full of butched bodies, going to an unknown destination.

A few days later, the fact that the “protestors” didn’t had any wounded, only dead, or that the big majority were people without any relation with radical movements, the truth was that they were just normal people and with well paid jobs, totally the opposite of what the government was saying, or the fact that the people couldn't access to the mortal remains of their families because the identification process was very complicated, ended with dozens of journalists and family members in jail. The government was using its iron fist with all his strength.

Not only that, the families of the deceased received a legal document, very complex, which exempted them from paying the estate millions in damages, but only if they refused to start any legal action or make any comment about what happened. If they accepted that, they’ll receive a huge compensation in their bank accounts, to palliate the problems of the bad state of the corpses of their families, caused by a fire started during the riots. They were in such a bad state that they couldn't open, under any circumstance, the coffins, which will be sent sealed.

Soon the eye of the public moved to other matters: the classic affair of the leader of the opposition, a war in a colony or the next sport event, all of them managed to silence, with the help of the government, the voices that wanted answers about that weekend."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chapter 5: The Lie

“The horrible riots that started in the morning of the past Saturday have been finally controlled by our heroic forces of security, and supported by the army. After a bloody battle against the savage rioters, and with the purpose to bring peace back again at the neighborhood of Montmartre, we have lost 138 men, and there are more than 240 wounded. Their sacrifices only strengthen our compromise with the defense of democracy and its institutions. We'll never give up against blackmail or the violence of those who can't understand the most basic rules of civilization, doesn't matter where they come from!

About the rioters, who from now on I’ll refer, without any doubt or remorse, as bloody and inhuman terrorists, they have 580 wounded and dead. We are now at the first stages of the investigation, we think they came from all over France and Europe, armed as real guerrilla forces and with the objective of create huge incidents in the metro of Paris, and being able to blackmail the legitimate government of the French people.

These incidents have been so dire that this same morning I’ve passed at the National Assembly new laws, which have as objective strengthen our democratic system against the terrorist menace. This way, the development of the investigation is now in the hands of a special police force, created to this purpose: the AUZ (Antiterroriste Unité Zero). Now all the processes will be faster, and we, as nation, are protected against terrible and antidemocratic demonstrations. Also, there are some rights that are going to be suspended for a short time, to help regain complete control of the situation an avoid problems that could help our enemies in this dire moments.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"CHAPTER IV: INFECTION"
--------------------------------

Saturday 6th November

-10:30. The professor’s assistant decides to go round his place, as the storm seems to give a break. The city slowly recovers from the tremendous deluge.

-11:13. The police have cordoned off the block. No one is allowed in. Three ambulances are waiting next to the police watch. It is a rare fact that there is nobody by the other side of the cordon. Everyone seems to ignore what the matter is. The upset neighbours are talking about some weird events during the previous night, but the storm sounds as the most probable cause of all that havoc.

-12:10. The professor’s assistant cannot manage to obtain reliable information, let alone contact him. He decides to return to university.

-12:30. Something happens in the Paris underground. The first rumours are about groups of hooligans and troublemakers out of control. The riots are rapidly attributed to extreme left-wingers heading to a demonstration organized by the Confédération Nationale du Travail.

-13:35. The underground is evacuated. Controls are installed by all the underground exits.

-14:40. All television and radio stations echo the same message: “Very rough riots are occurring at the moment between the capital police and demonstrators, apparently come from all over France and guerrilla-wise organized. Curfew has been established and it is forbidden to go anywhere near the Montmartre district.”

-15:48. Dozens of “Gazelle” and “SA 330 Puma” helicopters from the French army are flying over the capital. Threads of military lorries clogged with soldiers go round the major Parisian avenues. All access to the northern area has been blocked by the army.

Tuesday 9th November

-14:20. The President of the Republic, Georges Pompidou, is speaking to the media. The whole population impatiently stand by the radio. In a historical press conference he explains, in solemn countenance, that the terrible riots are finally over.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"CAPÍTULO IV: INFECCIÓN"
---------------------------------

Sábado 6 de noviembre.

"CHAPTER III: THE AUTOPSY"
--------------------------------

After three weeks, in the basement of the National Palaces of the Invalides, in Paris, a medical crew from the Pitié-Salpêtière were working with specialist from the Scientific Police General Department. There were as well experts from the Louvre Museum, coordinated by Jean-Herní Charnay. Their aim was to carry out an autopsy and collect samplesfrom the mysterious martyr.

Extract of the appendix of the central dossier of the investigation. It included the autopsy extract and the event timing, based on the associated interviews of the investigation.

Thursday 4th November.

  • 07:58 h. The Louvre experts carefully remove the ropes, clothing and jewelry that adorn the corpse.
  • 08:56 h. The autopsy begins with an external examination of the body. It seems to be obvious fight and torture marks. Curiously, many of them seem post-mortem marks.
  • 09:50 h. Samples from the mummy have been taken. We have obtained tissue from the optic nerve, the heart and one of the lungs.
  • 10:00 h. The crew is about to extract a blood sample, absolutely coagulated, from the femoral artery.
  • 10:05 h. Dr. Charnay has had a ridiculous accident. He has stumbled over one of the thick lamp wires and has fallen onto the technician that was extracting blood from the incorrupt body. He seems to have been stung by the needle in his forearm. The tap looks quite mild. He has gone back to the room after briefly being looked after.
  • 11:20 h. The sample extractions from abdomen and the inner part of the spine have been terminated.
  • 12:00 h. Professor Charnay looks indisposed. His appearance has rapidly changed and he shows now a serious pale countenance. He is shivering. In spite of our insistence the doctor refuses to visit a hospital and blames tiredness and the flu for this situation, since there is rough weather with cold and rain these days in France.
  • 14:40 h. The professor apologizes and decides to go home in order to have some rest.
  • 19:37 h. Charnay’s assitant repeatedly rings the doctor to ask about his health, obtaining no answer.

Friday 5th November.

  • 09:05 h. Professor Charnay has not come to university today. His assistant phones his home again… there is no answer.
  • 13:40 h. Torrential hail showers over Paris. It looks like midnight even though it is lunch time. Sécurité Civile recommends the population not leaving their homes unless absolutely necessary. The weather forecast announces a light improvement in the next twenty-four hours. The people lock themselves at home, attentive to the radio.

Even if we do not consider ourselves to be superstitious at all, we have aimed to bring an alienated, voyeurism look and feel to this show. The theme, chosen by the very own artists of the collective, is a sum of all those things and concepts that are surrounding the fears and longings of the human being: From the life (and death) forms living outside of us, to our society and the most abstract parts of our emotional values.
